The running blog > Injury and recovery: a runner’s journey back
January 15th, 2025
Injuries are every runner’s nightmare. They not only derail your training but also disrupt the rhythm of your life. For me, this nightmare became a reality four weeks ago when I was struck with a hamstring injury. At first, it seemed manageable—it faded after a few days, and I thought I could bounce back. But just as I started to feel better, I developed an Achilles issue.
Like many runners, I chose to push through. I kept running, convincing myself that it was just another bump in the road. But this time, I was wrong. It got worse.
For the past three weeks, I’ve been forced into near-total rest—a complete shock to my system. Going from training every day to doing almost nothing was not just physically frustrating but mentally draining. My energy levels plummeted, my focus wavered, and my daily rhythm was turned upside down.
I started sleeping in more than usual, only to feel even more tired throughout the day. Without the structure and purpose that running brings, I found myself in a strange, unmotivated fog. The days felt longer, and the progress I’d worked so hard for felt like it was slipping through my fingers.
The good news? I’m back to moving again. Slowly, yes, but it’s a start. Recovery has taught me that there’s no shortcut to healing—you have to respect the process. For now, I’m focusing on:
Each step, each session, is a reminder that progress is possible—even if it feels slower than I’d like.
This injury has been a humbling experience, and it’s taught me some important lessons:
Listen to your body: Ignoring warning signs and pushing through pain isn’t always the answer. Sometimes rest is the most productive thing you can do.
Recovery is not linear: Healing comes with ups and downs. Progress is not always immediate, but consistency and care will pay off.
Adapt your mindset: When running isn’t possible, focus on what you can do. Whether it’s walking, gym work, or even mental training, every little bit helps.
I’m grateful to be moving again, and while I’m not back to full training yet, I’m optimistic about the journey ahead. Injuries may feel like setbacks, but they’re also opportunities to learn, grow, and return stronger. For now, I’ll keep taking it slow, rebuilding the foundation, and appreciating every small step forward.
This isn’t the end of the story—it’s just a detour. And I’m ready to find my way back.
